Our Loving Rooster

We noticed that our rooster was walking funny, and soon it was apparent that he had some brain dysfunction and that he was dying.

He has been our best rooster ever; a true gentleman, he's never attacked or even threatened a human, and last fall he fought off a predator and came running home missing his tail feathers, just his small stub standing naked.

He's the most beautiful rooster I've ever seen. He's been faithful to us and to his hens for six or seven good years.

Normally, I would take a sick animal and put it where a predator could get it (predators must eat too; it's the circle of life). But since he's been such a perfect gentleman, I will continue to feed and water him by hand until his last breath.

Update: The rooster passed away after I fed and watered him, around noon, June 3, 2004.

This last picture, was taken when he'd just turned a year old. It was a very bright day and his colors just glistened in the light.
